Call for case studies: Examples of scaling up InfraTech financing and development
Do you have a case study on scaling up InfraTech financing and development? If so, share it with us and be included in our online Knowledge Hub*. In addition, the top five case studies submitted will be featured in the G20’s InfraTech Blueprint and promoted by the GI Hub.

Why is the GI Hub running this call for case studies?
There are compelling benefits to scaling up investment and InfraTech adoption. In particular, the large-scale deployment of innovative technologies is a critical pathway to achieving the Paris Agreement, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and net zero carbon targets by 2030 and 2050.
While the potential for InfraTech is well-recognised, the industry’s capacity to finance and deliver within infrastructure projects is still very limited. InfraTech is often considered too risky by financiers, resulting in technologies being developed but not implemented at scale.
To address this barrier, the GI Hub is seeking evidence of successful approaches for financing and developing InfraTech that can be scaled and replicated across sectors and jurisdictions. These approaches include policy, commercial, financing, and technological interventions, as detailed further below.
The results from this call for case studies will be provided to the G20 Infrastructure Working Group (IWG) in July 2022.
What are we delivering to the G20?
This year, the G20 IWG, with support from the GI Hub and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, will continue the work started in 2020 by the G20 InfraTech Agenda through the development of a G20 Blueprint for scaling up InfraTech financing and development (‘Blueprint’).
The Blueprint will be a prioritised and actionable list of opportunities for the G20 in scaling up the development and financing of InfraTech, and will be supported by a compendium of case studies. The Blueprint will identify the gaps in knowledge and capacity for investing in InfraTech and highlight the focus areas that require the G20’s attention in the future.
The GI Hub is running this global call for case studies to gather the evidence needed to inform this Blueprint and ensure that it is practical and relevant across a range of national and regional circumstances.
What is InfraTech?
InfraTech is defined by the G20 InfraTech Agenda as 'the integration of material, machine, and digital technologies across the infrastructure lifecycle.' This could include (but is not limited to) the following:
In essence, this involves the integration of digital and non-digital technologies with physical infrastructure to deliver one or more of the following outcomes:
- climate mitigation
- climate adaptation
- enhanced social inclusion
- enhanced pandemic preparedness and response
- improved infrastructure delivery and/or performance.
What kinds of approaches are we looking for?
We are looking for case studies that demonstrate effective approaches / interventions for de-risking and attracting investment to InfraTech projects at scale.
Approaches could fall under one or more of the following categories:
- policy (e.g. procurement, regulations, strategies)
- commercial (e.g. delivery models, partnership models)
- technological (e.g. digital platforms, data/AI, cybersecurity)
- financial instruments (e.g. specialised funds, grants, equity, retained earnings)
- Other broader incentive schemes.
Selected case studies of approaches / interventions should exemplify the following characteristics:
- Impact: the submission is accompanied by data or information (either predicted or actual) on impact in line with the desired project outcomes.
- Commercial viability: the submission can demonstrate that the solutions has been (or has the potential) to be viably deployed at scale.
- Replicability: the submission can demonstrate that this approach can be replicated (i.e. repeated) in other sectors and jurisdictions.
- Scalability: the submission can demonstrate that this approach can be scaled up (i.e. in terms of volume).
- Innovation: the submission can demonstrate that the approach is novel (i.e. it is a new kind of intervention, an intervention that has been adapted from an existing one, or the application of an existing intervention from another sector or type of project).

What are the important dates for the submission?
- 28 March 2022: Call for submission opens
- 30 June 2022: The call for submissions will close at 11:59PM CET (UTC/GMT+1) on Thursday 30 June 2022
- July 2022: Selection of case studies for inclusion into the GI Hub’s Knowledge Hub and the top five that will be featured in the Blueprint
- End of July 2022: Blueprint and case study library submitted to the G20 IWG
How can I submit a case study?
Download the case study template here and submit it to infratech@gihub.org before 11:59PM CET (UTC/GMT+1) on Thursday 30 June 2022
All submissions must be in English.
