Context: The UAE did not have federal guidelines for sustainability of road infrastructure; the initiative was started to ensure positive impact on the environment, the national economy, and society from these guidelines.
Aim(s) of the project: The guidelines aim at ensuring sustainability in future operations and maintenance, increasing the assets life-cycle, and enhancing the user experience.

The guidelines will cover the Principles selected above and ensure the implementation of these Principles by bringing a set of criteria for new roads.
Benefits
The initiative is expected to reduce the maintenance cost of roads and improve the road resilience and sustainability by covering the planning, design and the construction stages of road projects. The following categories are covered in the guidelines:
