Overview
The National Park protects rich biodiversity, made up of representative species of Brazilian fauna and flora, some of which are endangered, such as jaguars, pumas, yellow-crested alligators, purple-breasted parrots, hawks, peroba-rosa, ariticum, araucaria, and many other species of relevant value and scientific interest.
This expressive biological variability added to the unique landscape of the Iguazu Falls' rare scenic beauty made the Iguazu National Park the first Conservation Unit in Brazil to be established as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
The IguaƧu National Park is today an example of sustainability, where social and environmental development is carried out with the integration between protection and conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources.
The Park has more than two million visitors per year and is a very successful example of public and private partnerships in Brazil. The current contract of concession will expire in 2021, and a new procurement process is being structured by the Ministry of Environment, The Investment Partnerships Program, and the Brazilian Development Bank. The bidding auction will take place in the third quarter of 2021.

Relevance to QII
In this project, all the Principles for Quality Infrastructure Investment are being operationalized. The concession of conservation units is one of the main tools to avoid environmental harms, mainly in the Amazon Forest. It's essential to foster legal economic activities to Brazil's remote regions and engage the regional population in the conservation objectives. The ICMBio shall also direct their efforts to the paramount duty of environmental conservation/preservation instead of managing visitors centers.
Benefits
The concession of national parks is a clear example of how the PPPs could improve environmental conservation and regional economic development. The concessionaire is responsible for all investments in conservation and maintenance in the visitation areas and new infrastructure investments in the Park. Other benefits are the incentives for the public agency responsible for the conservation to focus their resources and efforts on conservation activities. Moreover, the private partner became an essential promoter of conservation activities and Environmental Education Programs.
Metrics
Number of visitors, deforestation in conservation units and fires in conservations units.
