This study was proposed to advance the development community’s understanding of social exclusion processes in Brazil. The initial objective was to analyze how processes of social exclusion created barriers to social mobility among the poor in Brazil, the better to identify some policy levers or interventions that could be used to remove those barriers and contribute to more effective poverty alleviation and social inclusion. With that objective in mind, an interdisciplinary group of Brazilian scholars (a political sociologist, cultural anthropologist, and economist) was asked to prepare position papers to help: (i) identify the key research questions through a literature review; (ii) propose basic hypotheses to be tested and; (iii) design a research proposal to answer the questions identified
